Back in the day…
In June 2009, the literary magazine Barcelona INK was launched.
As a quarterly publication, it produced 12 issues and quickly gained a strong reputation in a niche market: a literary magazine in a language unfamiliar to the residents of its own city.
From the beginning, its unique blend of content captured readers’ imaginations. Each issue combined interviews with prominent writers and poets connected to Barcelona—such as Colm Tóibín, Steve Toltz, Pauline Stainer, Alan Jenkins, Richard Thomson, and Philip Levine—with short stories and poems by emerging writers living in the city, alongside translations of Catalan authors we admired. The result was a captivating mix that resonated deeply with its audience.
Launch events were consistently packed, reflecting the magazine’s popularity. All 12 issues received critical acclaim, and a compilation of its highlights is available [here].
From the magazine’s legacy, BCN.INK Books was born. Today, it functions as both an echo chamber and occasional publisher for writers working in English, particularly those living in Barcelona and Catalonia. The latest addition to our catalogue is Nick Lloyd’s fascinating new book, exploring his travels through the Spanish Civil War, released earlier this year.
